INTENT
Site documentation and analysis shall identify patterns, flows, and narratives specific to DUMBO, Brooklyn toward informing new architectural proposals for the district. Study of cinematic sequencing and staging techniques will overlay functional and programmatic needs of the neigborhood and its vicinity. The resulting body of research will undertone and advance inspired design solutions for DUMBO, Brooklyn at interior, building, and urban scales.
Film & Architecture
As a temporal moving representation of idealized space, film offers the designer a critical body of inspiration for meaningful visual association. As a discipline, theoretically contemplated architecture offers an opportunity for deploying film-based study as a generator of the carefully considered built environment. Assuming an analogous relationship between cinematic conjecture and built form, this studio shall explore the portrayal and use of cinematic representation by various international filmmakers.
Film is the dynamic representation of space as well as the spatialization of time. As a design medium, it allows the artist to collapse time per desired means while concerning itself primarily with views revealed frame by frame. Alternatively, time in architecture is translated as a measure of the user’s regulated movement through space. In architecture as well as film, beyond the frame inference fosters implied understanding and development of the overall mood of a moment. Employing techniques similar to those used in cinematography, architectural design must contend not only with spaces visible within the viewframe, but also the order, atmosphere, and materiality of the spaces beyond the frame itself.
This studio shall begin its architectural inquiry from generative development of interior space analyzed through the lens of cinematic technique. The process will be further infomred by intensive research of site, program, and context at the urban scale.
This idea of taking a solid diagram and breaking it into so any different shapes is great. i believe its giving the idea of space and motion.
